Most people unfortunately do not realize that not all eye exams are created equal. “Well wait a minute, how can that be? I was told I had 20/20 vision in my new prescription, that’s all that matters, right???” Or how about, “Well, I paid extra for that photo that replaced dilation, so it must have been a good eye exam!”
As in most professions, the eye care industry is regulated by state agencies that set a minimum standard of care. But let’s be honest, who wants “the minimum level of care” when it comes to your only set of eyes? A recent poll showed that 8 out of 10 Americans feared losing their vision more than any other sense due to the consequential loss of freedom that would accompany blindness!
So, what exactly does a quality eye exam entail? Aside from the obvious – a caring doctor who listens to her patient’s concerns and takes the time to explain all findings and address all visual needs (that seems obvious but it’s shocking how often that simple step doesn’t happen!) – a thorough exam should fully assess the visual system, the health of the external eye and tear film, and examine the internal eye through dilated pupils (Bottom line: an image claiming to replace dilation DOES NOT provide the same level of care – this will be explained in its own future blog so stay tuned!!!). And a bonus would be an office that utilizes the latest digital technology to enhance the doctor’s evaluation!
Does this sound too good to be true? Well, prior to Dr. Racoma opening her office patients would be hard-pressed to find this level of care in one practice setting. As one of her recent patients so eloquently expressed, “Most thorough & complete eye exam I have ever had; makes the others I have had seem like a "drive by". Every step of the exam clearly explained and discussed. Dr. Racoma is highly qualified, communicates well with her patients, and is very personable. Support staff is great as well, and obviously care about their clients. Very nice facility with state-of-the-art equipment. I would highly recommend Dr. Racoma & Vista Vision.”
